We'll open this leg of the tour with a walk around the perimeter of the stadium site, which is bounded by South Capitol Street on the west, First Street SE on the east, N Street SE on the north, and Potomac Avenue SE to the south.

2004: Our first stop is the leafy interior of the block between N and O Streets SE, which will one day become a slice of the playing field. This unpaved alley passes through the planned site for a parking garage and extends into the future left field. The upper deck of the grandstand beyond its current dead end will offer a spectacular view of the Capitol dome.

2006: A controversy continues about whether the site's frontage on N Street SE should be devoted to above ground parking garages or mixed retail development. In any case, most of the interior of this block is a clay crater with no trace of green. The building at the far end of the alley has long since disappeared.
